Integrated Power Solutions for Altera FPGAs

DC/DC converters support core and I/O voltages from 0.59V to 5.1V

Companies using FPGAs are looking to achieve competitive advantage through lower total cost power solutions that deliver higher system reliability with fewer components; faster time to market with minimal engineering resources; higher power conversion efficiencies with state of the art topologies; and reduced printed circuit board real estate. For designers looking to realise these goals, the Astec, Artesyn range now provides a total choice of DC/DC converters for Altera FPGA requirements.

Astec and Artesyn have the industry’s broadest Point of Load (PoL) DC/DC converter product offering. In addition, as the diagram below shows, the company can also provide the intermediate bus converters and the low to medium power AC/DC power supplies that provide the input voltages for these PoLs. The result is a comprehensive family of products that literally can handle every part of the power conversion process from the wall outlet to the board-mounted device.

Among the wide range of PoL DC/DC converters are products that are particularly well-suited to power FPGA core and I/O requirements from 0.59V to 5.1V at currents from 1A to 30A. These modular products offer many advantages over discrete solutions based on PWM controllers, MOSFETs and passive components - not least by reducing design complexity and offering a lower total cost solution in many applications. Furthermore, because they are modular, by choosing one of these devices the need to work with multiple vendors of discrete components is eliminated, as are the potentially lengthy design, debug, layout and test processes.

By working closely with Altera, a number of Astec and Artesyn parts have been identified as being suitable for use with the company’s Stratix®, Cyclone™ and MAX® series of FPGAs. Details of these devices can be found in a new cross reference guide available from Arrow.

The LDO03C series of DC/DC converters have been identified for use with core and I/O currents of 1.0A to 2.5A, while the LDO06C series meets requirements for currents from 2.5A to 5A. Currents in the region of 5A to 10A are addressed using the LDO10C series. For higher currents of 10A to 15A and 15A to 30A, the SMT15E and SMT30E PoL DC/DC converters provide the best respective solutions.

The LDO0x and SMTxx devices are high-density converters designed to provide good efficiency and performance, minimum footprint and wide output voltage trim/adjustability. Wide input voltage ranges, integrated protection functionality and remote on/off are provided as standard.
