High-Performance 8-Bit CAN Controller Features Embedded Flash
CAN and LIN on a single chip
The new XC886/888CLM 8-bit microcontroller from Infineon integrates both a CAN controller and LIN support on a single chip designed for use in exacting automotive environments. Using a powerful XC800 core based on the industry-standard 8051 architecture, the device reduces costs by integrating common peripheral functions.
The new 24MHz controller features up to 32Kbyte of automotive-qualified embedded Flash memory, designed for zero defects. System cost and complexity are further reduced by the inclusion on-chip of an intelligent PWM unit, a highly accurate 10-bit ADC with fast (1.5µs) conversion speed, a CORDIC module and a Multiplication Division Unit (MDU) for fast mathematical computations.
The on-chip CAN controller module (V2.0B active) within the XC886/888CLM reduces the CPU load by performing most of the functions required by the networking protocol, including masking, filtering and buffering of CAN frames. In combination with LIN functionality, this makes it suitable for automotive gateway applications. In addition the device can be used in automotive body control and products such as lifts, escalators, air conditioning, fans and white goods.
Inclusion of hardware acceleration units allows performance to be enhanced with minimal impact on power budgets: the MDU, for instance, permits single-cycle 16-bit x 16-bit multiplication and 32-bit addition, whilst the dedicated Capture and Compare Unit (CCU6) allows multifunctional motor control.
The device also integrates an on-chip oscillator with ±5% accuracy; Embedded Voltage Regulator (EVR) and brown-out detection. Power-down current is less than 10µA, and the unit can be woken up in less than 1ms.
The XC886/888CLM embedded Flash products offer flexibility in terms of reprogrammability and functionality: up to 8Kbyte of Flash can be used for EEPROM emulation. The device is also available in compatible ROM-based variants, for high-volume, lost cost requirements. All versions include 256byte RAM and 1536byte XRAM.
The XC886/888CLM is supported by a full set of development tools, ranging from starter kits and evaluation boards to full-featured Integrated Development Environments and third-party real-time operating systems.
