Bridge IC Provides SPI/I²C Host to High-speed, Low Current UART Communication
Single and Dual UARTs offer IrDA support, 8 GPIO ports and rates to 5Mbit/s
Devices in the Philips Semiconductors SC16ISxx family of single and dual UARTs offer full duplex operation with data rates up to 5Mbit/s while guaranteeing low operating and sleeping current.
The SC16IS752/SC16IS762 and SC16IS740/750/760 devices provide an I²C-bus/SPI bus interface to a dual-channel and single-channel high performance UART respectively. The chips enable seamless protocol conversion from I²C-bus/SPI to RS-232/RS-485 and are fully bidirectional. As well as data rates up to 5Mbit/s and low operating and sleeping current; the devices also provide the application with eight additional programmable I/O pins. Compact packaging makes the ICs ideal for hand-held, battery operation.
The SC16IS762 differs from the SC16IS752, and the SC16IS760 from the SC16IS750, in that the former support SPI clock speeds up to 15Mbit/s instead of 4Mbit/s, and support IrDA SIR up to 1.152Mbit/s. The SC16IS740 is functionally and electrically identical to the SC16IS750, with the exception of the programmable I/O pins, which are only present on the SC16IS750.
All of the new devices incorporate an internal register set that is backward compatible with the widely used and widely popular 16C450. This allows the software to be easily written or ported from another platform.
Additional advanced features include auto hardware and software flow control, automatic RS-485 support and software reset. This allows the software to reset the UART at any moment, independent of the hardware reset signal.
