Buck Regulator Solutions for Today’s Power Management Needs
Tiny package cuts space requirements
Micrel has developed a new series of PWM buck regulators for applications requiring up to 3A output from 5V and 3V/3.3V rails. Smaller than today’s LDO solutions and far more compact than any other buck regulator available on the market, these solutions also offer high efficiency DC/DC power conversion and greater design flexibility.
The MIC2207 and the MIC2208 are 3A 2MHz and 1MHz PWM buck regulators, respectively, supplied in tiny 3mm x 3mm MLF-10L packages. They are ideal solutions for telecom/networking equipment, server and consumer electronics applications.
Micrel’s MIC2207 buck regulator offers an impressive 33% reduction in board occupancy when compared to other solutions currently on the market. In addition, the device offers customers a very cost-effective solution by reducing the size of external components, and in some cases eliminating them altogether.
For today’s advanced digital cores, which demand higher power densities, ultra-fast load steps and enhanced power conversion performance, Micrel’s smaller MIC2208 buck regulator provides increased flexibility and excellent transient response.
The MIC2207 device features ultra-fast operation and proprietary internal compensation circuitry. This confers outstanding transient response and allows the use of the small, low-cost LC components.
A low-resistance integrated P-channel MOSFET allows the chip to deliver currents of up to 3A with more than 94% efficiency. The output voltage can be adjusted down to 1V, and the device can operate with a maximum duty cycle of 100% for use in Low DropOut (LDO) conditions. The P-MOSFET also eliminates the need for a sense resistor to provide a current limit, further reducing the need for external components. The MIC2208 features a flexible design and ultra-fast transient response.
The MIC2207 and MIC2208 both operate using supply voltages from 2.7V to 5.5V and include, a fully integrated 3A MOSFET switch, micropower and thermal shutdown, and current limit protection.
