Phototriacs Offer 5kV/µs Critical Rate of Rise
Trigger currents as low as 1.6mA

A new family of phototriacs from Vishay Intertechnology offers critical rate of rise specifications of 5kV/µs, rated to be five times faster than any competing device. The devices, which will be used to provide isolation between logic circuitry and high-voltage subsystems, feature trigger currents as low as 1.6mA.

The new VO4157, VO4257, VO4158 and VO4258 devices are designed for applications such as solid state relays, AC motor drives, TRIAC drives, temperature and lighting controls, solenoid and valve control and switching power supplies. The family includes 12 variants, offering a choice of 400V, 600V, 700V or 800V blocking voltage, trigger currents of 1.6mA, 2.0mA and 3.0mA, and the option of zero-crossing or non-zero-crossing operation.

Their low trigger current provides high sensitivity and enables direct interfacing with microcontrollers and digital logic, whilst the fast dV/dt performance reduces and can in some cases eliminate the need for a snubber circuit.

With an isolation test voltage of 5300VRMS, the devices can be used to meet the Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) immunity requirements of IEC1000-4-4, and are certified for reinforced insulation in accordance with IEC60950 2.10.5.1. IEC60747-5-2 (VDE0884) insulation is available as an option, and the entire family is certified by key safety regulatory agencies including UL, CUL and VDE.

Internally, the devices consist of a GaAs IRLED optically coupled to a photosensitive triac. A proprietary dV/dt clamp is used to confer the phototriacs’ high rate of rise.

Supplied in a six-pin DIP, the devices comply with the requirements of RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.
