Small, Low-Cost Micro Addresses Mass Market Opportunities
Demonstration kits available from Arrow
Freescale’s MC9RS08KA 8-bit microcontroller is aimed at ultra low-end solutions. It answers a number of challenges facing developers of high-volume products, including board space- limited designs, reducing Bill-Of-Materials (BOM) and shortening development cycle times.
With a number of packaging options, the MC9RS08KA gives developers the flexibility to design extremely compact and cost-effective applications. Extremely competitively priced, the KA opens the door for designing huge volumes of disposable electronic devices. Simple implementation and ease of integration can help even novice designers cut their development cycle time from months to days, enabling the introduction of new products more quickly.
The family is the first implementation of Freescale’s RS08 core, a reduced version of the company’s S08 Central Processing Unit (CPU). Featuring simpler constructs, it retains the very compact and efficient coding attributes of the S08, allowing most embedded applications to be realised in small pin-count devices with under 16Kbyte memory.
The RS08 is 30% smaller than the S08 and is optimised for low-cost, space-efficient operation allowing the 9RS08KA to be made available in an ultra-small 3mm x 3mm six-pin QFN package. It is particularly suitable for use in simple electromechanical devices that are migrating to fully solid-state electronic operation, or small portable devices and disposable products.
The MC9RS08KA features up to 2KByte third-generation Flash memory with extremely fast byte-writable programming. In addition to flexible clock options, it includes an eight-bit modulo timer and real-time interrupt trigger, both with prescaler, and an on-chip analogue comparator.
Development support includes the cost-effective DEM09RS08KA2 demonstration board with potentiometer, LEDs, serial port and built-in USB-BDM cable. Standalone or in-circuit Flash programming hardware is also available, with support for in-circuit emulation and debugging. Freescale’s Fast Track™ CodeWarrior™ development tools, including CodeWarrior Development Studio, speeds code production and testing.
