The ISL1202x family of Real Time Clocks (RTCs) from Intersil features high levels of integration, for designs with board space limitations. Variants are available that incorporate memory, CPU supervisory functions, and frequency trimming, eliminating the corresponding external components.
The RTCs integrate 4Kbit (512 x 8-bit) of Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) with a lifetime of two million write cycles. They provide a complete set of features for consumer products and industrial applications, and their frequency trimming facility allows the use of a low-cost crystal, cutting overall system Bill-Of-Materials (BOM).
The entire family features low power dissipation (800nA battery supply current) in battery back-up mode, enabling the use of small batteries or super capacitors for back-up, critical in hand-held applications. The ISL12027, ISL12028 and ISL12029 also integrate CPU supervisory functions, providing board space savings by eliminating the need for discrete devices for power-on reset and watchdog timer.
The ISL12026 and ISL12027 are housed in eight-pin Small Outline (SO) and TSSOP packages. The ISL12028 and ISL12029 are available in 14-pin SO and TSSOP packages. Their combination of low power, high integration and a very small footprint makes them well suited for consumer applications such as DVDR (DVD Recordable) and HDTV equipment, Point-Of-Sale (POS) systems and other consumer electronics devices.
Industrial applications include utility meters, Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and security/fire monitoring. The devices can also be used in hand-held applications such as PDAs, scanners, portable medical equipment and other hand-held devices.
The devices include power-fail indicator, two periodic or polled alarms and intelligent battery backup switching. The real-time clock has separate registers for hours, minutes and seconds; the internal calendar is accurate through 2099, with automatic leap year correction.
