OneNAND Flash Devices Combine Best of NOR and NAND
NAND density with NOR interface
Samsung’s OneNAND Flash memory devices combine the ultra-high density of NAND-based devices with the read performance usually associated with NOR technologies. The result is increased system performance with no need to change controllers: existing hardware platforms can be simply modified.
The devices will find applications in diverse areas, including embedded systems, set-top boxes, GPS, digital TVs, handsets and other mobile applications. They can achieve sustained read rates of up to 108MB/s to optimise application functionality and are available in single-chip densities from 512Mb up to 4Gb.
With OneNAND, designers can use their existing chipset’s NOR interface to communicate directly with the Flash memory, eliminating the need for a separate NAND device. In addition, the devices have faster read/write performance that cannot be attained with NOR Flash alone. This is achieved through the use of a synchronous burst read interface and asynchronous write host interface which enables a sustained write performance of 10MB/s.
Available in 63-ball FBGA packages, the devices are based on Single-Layer Cell (SLC) technology. They incorporate automatic 2-bit EDC/1-bit ECC, and Samsung supplies software support in the form of Flash drivers and file systems, Extended Sector Remapper and Transaction File Systems, for all major OS platforms.
