Controllers Optimised for Motor Control and Smart Sensing
Integrated DDS and PWM
Analog Devices has extended its range of precision analogue microcontrollers with the launch of two devices optimised for motor control and smart sensing. The ADuC7128 and ADuC7129 combine a 32-bit ARM7 RISC core with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller and Direct Digital Synthesiser (DDS) for stimulus generation.
The controllers incorporate a 12-bit multichannel, Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) operating at speeds of up to 1MSPS (Mega-Samples-Per-Second) and 126 Kbytes of Flash memory. They feature a 44MIPS ARM7TDMI core, and build on the success of the company’s ADuC702x family by embedding application-specific analogue peripherals to reduce application development time and cost.
The on-chip PWM controller boasts six channels and an H-bridge mode. It is complemented by an on-chip quadrature encoder for the speed, position and direction control required by DC motor controls. The devices also provide I/V control, making them suitable for a variety of motor control applications. The PWMs themselves can also be used as general purpose 16-bit PWMs to provide additional DAC outputs, high frequency clocks or set point control, for example.
The 32-bit DDS operates at 21MHz, enabling smart sensor applications with a minimum frequency range of 4.8MHz. The integrated low-pass filter ensures a clean signal, allowing the generation of a raw sine wave at up to 1MHz for smart sensing applications. A 100Ω driver at the DDS output is controlled by the microprocessor core and Analogue Front End (AFE).
Additional features include a comparator, temperature sensor, PLA (Programmable Logic Array) and several communications ports including two UARTs: these peripherals can further reduce cost, board space and development time.
The ADuC7128 is supplied in a 9mm x 9mm 64-LFCSP (Lead-Frame Chip-Scale Package) and is specified over an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The ADuC7129 is an 80-pin LQFP (Low Profile Quad Flat Pack) version, offering more GPIO and an external memory interface.
