The newest members of Analog Devices’ Blackfin family, the ADSP-BF538F and ADSP-BF539F, are the first such devices to be combined with Flash memory in a single package. The ADSP-BF539F is designed specifically for the automotive market, providing CAN and MOST bus connectivity, whilst the ADSP-BF538F is suitable for more broad-based industrial, medical and biometrics applications.
These Flash-equipped processors are produced in collaboration with Spansion, the world's largest pure-play provider of Flash memory solutions and a trusted supplier to the automotive market. Using Known Good Die (KGD) technology, they are designed for memory-hungry convergent-processing applications that incorporate audio, video, and other advanced features such as conversation voice recognition.
Flash memory has emerged as a key component of such next-generation applications, freeing designers to develop increasingly sophisticated multi-function end products. Both new Blackfin devices are available with either 512Kbyte or 1Mbyte on-board. By minimising the need for external peripherals and memory, these new 500MHz processors reduce time-to-market and development and integration costs.
The ADSP-BF539F is supplied to automotive quality levels and supported by the Integrity Real-Time Operating System from Green Hills Software. It can execute a full range of real-time signal processing, vehicle network stacks, diagnostics code, and software download functions with ease.
Both devices combine industry-standard interfaces, including CAN, SPORTs UARTS, SPI, TWI and GPIO, with a high-performance processor core and dual DMA controllers, enabling designers to develop cost-effective solutions quickly with a minimum of external components.
The Blackfin range of processors represents a new breed of 16/32-bit devices aimed at embedded systems designers. With the industry's highest performance and best power efficiency, they can address applications where a convergence of capabilities is critical: these include multi-format audio, video, voice and image processing; multi-mode baseband and packet processing; and real-time security and control processing.
