3V and low-power operation for portable applications
Spansion’s 1Gbit MirrorBit NOR GL Flash memory (S29GL01GP) is the industry’s first 3V, single-chip NOR Flash memory device. It rounds out the company’s comprehensive offering for code and data storage from 1Mbit to 1Gbit.
Fabricated on 90nm process technology, the S29GL01GP offers a fast page access time of 25ns with a corresponding random access time of 110ns. It features a write buffer that allows up to 32 words (64bytes) to be programmed in one operation, resulting in faster effective programming time than standard programming algorithms. This makes it well-suited for embedded applications that require high-density storage, high speed and low power consumption.
To ease migration to the 1Gbit device, the entire MirrorBit NOR GL Flash family (1Gbit down to 16Mbit) is available in a Universal Footprint featuring the same pinouts, addresses and command sets. This footprint also extends to Spansion’s traditional floating-gate NOR families, allowing users to evolve their systems without having to alter board layouts or software.
The 1Gbit device is also compatible in function, continuing 3V single power supply operation, 8- or 16-bit functions, and accelerated programming, by applying higher voltage to the WP#/ACC-pin during production. It features sector sizes of 128Kbyte, contributing to an overall increased system performance by offering larger 8-word/16byte page read buffers.
The S29GL01GP offers a range of security features, including Advanced Sector Protection, which prevents unauthorised write and erase operations in any user-defined combination of sectors without the requirement to apply higher voltage to any pin. A Dynamic Protection Mode helps to avoid programming errors. Persistent Protection Bits can be set to lock down defined sectors, defeating unauthorised software changes, as long as tuners or hackers have no access to the hardware. With Password Sector Protection even such hardware access will be unsuccessful, as long as the password is kept secure.
Like the entire GL family, the S29GL01GP, is also available with enhanced versatile I/O control (VIO voltage 1.65V to 1.95V). This enables the device to generate and tolerate the voltage level that is asserted on the VIO pin: a particularly useful feature in 1.8V environments such as portable battery-powered devices. To further improve the device’s performance in such applications, the S29GL01GP features a standby mode with current consumption of just 1µA.
