Market's Slimmest Three-Axis Digital Accelerometer

Robust MEMS-based device
The LIS3LV02DL from STMicroelectronics is believed to be the market’s thinnest digital output three-axis accelerometer. Embedding high performance and smart functionality in a package just 1mm high, the device opens new possibilities for advanced motion-based applications in appliances such as thin clamshell mobile phones, GPS modules and various handheld applications.

The new sensor can measure both tilt and acceleration along all three (x, y, z) axes at a very low noise level and low power consumption, which is especially critical in battery-operated portable systems. As well as mobile telephones, it will find applications in PDAs, MP3 players, laptop PCs, and remote controls for consumer appliances.

Manufactured in STMicroelectronics proprietary THELMA15 technology, the LIS3LV02DL provides both +/-2.0g and +/-6.0g full-scale acceleration ranges, selectable in software during operation if necessary. The device offers high temperature stability and tight offset tolerances, and its robust design provides very high immunity to vibration and a shock resistance up to 10,000g.

The LIS3LV02DL includes a number of advanced features, including a free-fall and wake-up flag. On-board direction detection helps the system to quickly identify the direction of movement when a threshold is crossed along any of the three axes, before any data calculations are made.

The device also includes software-adjustable bandwidth, providing optimised performance for different frequencies. This allows designers to effectively combine measurements of slow and fast motions, such as tilt and vibrations.

Supplied in 16-pin LGA (LIS3LVOTDL) and QFN28 (LIS3LV02DQ) packages, the new sensor joins STMicroelectronics existing family of three-axis accelerometers with a standard SPI/I²C digital interface. The digital output streamlines communication with the digital logic; it eliminates the need for a dedicated A/D Converter on each input channel and enables the sensor to share interfaces with other devices, thereby saving further space in small-form-factor systems.

In addition to two- and three-axis digital components, STMicroelectronics also supplies two-axis and three-axis analogue MEMS sensors, covering the full range of applications including user interfaces, sports equipment, machine vibration measurement and control, robot control, navigation, healthcare and safety equipment.
