Solid State Disks Directly Replace Hard Drives

Enhanced durability, speed, power and weight
Samsung’s new range of NAND-Flash Solid-State Disks (SSDs) are designed to interface with external systems in exactly the same way as a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD), whilst retaining all of the advantages of solid state operation.

The new drives feature low power consumption, better resistance to shock and vibration, lighter weight and faster read/write performance than an HDD. The company says that this combination of features will rapidly allow NAND Flash to expand from its current application base in digital still cameras, MP3 players and 3G mobile handsets, to address mobile and digital consumer appliances, and industrial and military markets.

The new SSDs will also find use in notebook PCs, sub-notebook PCs and tablet PCs. They include memory, controller, connectors and other elements on a single PCB. The host interface is fully compliant with the ATA5 specification and supports PIO modes 0-4 and UDMA mode 4 (Ultra DMA 66MHz). The range includes a full line-up of physical form factors and storage capacities, including 2.5inch and 1.8inch versions with storage capacities ranging from 4GByte to 32GByte.

At 0.5W active, 0.01W standby and 0W idle, power consumption is less than 10% of that required by an HDD, giving a 30-minute extension of battery life under typical use conditions. Weight is reduced by one half, and performance is enhanced by over 150%: read rate is up to 58MByte/s and write speed to 32MByte/s. Just as important is the SDD’s ability to provide ‘instant-on’ and 50% faster boot speed via its combination of high read rate and low latency.

Because they are free of moving parts, SSDs have minimal noise and heat emission. Moreover, they are highly reliable (guaranteed operation up to 100,000 hours) with exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures (-20°C to +125°C) and humidity; and can withstand impact of over 1000g.
