Intelligent Power Supplies to be Demonstrated at Electronica

Latest-generation modular AC/DC power supplies can be configured to deliver up to 1500W
Arrow franchise Astec will be displaying and demonstrating its iMP™ range of intelligent power supplies at Electronica (Munich, November 14-17) on Stand 433, Hall B2. Live demonstrations of these products will be provided twice a day, starting at 10.30 and 14.30, each lasting about an hour. Also on show for the first time at Electronica will be the Astec DS Series distributed power system products, which are also available from Arrow.

With digital control and a range of hardware modules, the new iMP Series from Astec Power enables designers to tailor solutions precisely to their individual needs, with single-, dual- and triple-output modules in power ratings from 600W to 1500W. Modules can be configured in a selection of four MP cases, accepting input voltages from 85VAC to 264VAC or 120VDC to 350VDC. Cases can accommodate up to seven individual modules with a choice of outputs ranging from 2VDC to 60VDC.

In addition to having 50% higher power density than previous generation products, this new breed of switching power supplies uses integrated digital capabilities to provide smart communication and programmable control features that enable designers to fine-tune power precisely for their needs, throughout the development process.

The easy-to-use microprocessor interface allows designers to make adjustments to a host of parameters including: voltage, current limit, fan speed, output sequencing and over voltage set points, amongst others. Using the iMP Series intelligent I²C control, designers can also program key features on each output, including: output voltage, output enable/sequencing, module inhibit/enable polarity, DC OK thresholds, over temperature threshold, and output current limit set-point and type.

Arrow currently builds the MP series in its own facility for rapid delivery and will soon receive formal certification for configuration of the Astec iMP family, which means that customers will have a fully certified source for application-specific iMP-based solutions that can be delivered in as little as two weeks.

Astec DS Series Bulk Switcher Modules
To address the demanding requirements of high-density applications, the popular Astec DS series of high-density AC/DC distributed bulk power front-end power supplies has been extended to include two new models.

With a +12VDC main output and a +3.3VDC standby output, the new DS650-3 model increases the available power to 650W. This power supply also incorporates full RoHS compliance and meets tantalum cap-free industry requirements. An 850W model with the same package and pin-outs is housed in a 1U by 2U form factor (40mm x 81mm x 279mm), which enables flexible configuration to maximise the use of rack space.

The high-density (12W/in³) design and high-availability features make the new DS models especially suitable for high-density server applications as well as datacom, data storage, medical and industrial. Featuring full current-sharing capabilities and internal MOSFET OR-ing for isolation, the DS Series is specifically designed to support hot-swap and redundant applications requiring maximum reliability.

Users can install up to five 650W (3250W) or 850W (4250W) units in a 1U rack and up to 10 units in a 2U rack (6500W – 8500W). As part of a comprehensive solution, to round out a designer’s overall power system, Astec Power also offers a complete line of Point of Load DC/DC converters to complement the DS Series.
