TFTs Provide High Quality for Mobile Appliances

Three new TFT (Thin Film Transistor) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) modules from Everbouquet provide improved performance and more flexibility for designers of mobile telephones and similar handheld products. These 1.5inch, 1.8inch and 1.9inch modules use highly integrated controllers to cut component count in space-constrained applications.



The new devices are colour active matrix TFT LCD modules that use amorphous silicon TFTs as switching devices to provide high quality images. Each module is composed of a transmissive type TFT-LCD panel, a driver circuit and a backlight unit.

With a low active power consumption, sleep and standby modes for further power savings, and partial screen display function, all three modules are suitable for use in mobile telephones and other portable appliances. They provide a high-speed RAM write function, and excellent optical characteristics including high contrast, high brightness and Gamma adjustment.

The MF128128C15-BFU is a 1.5inch panel able to display up to 65,000 colours at a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. It communicates via an 80-system 8-bit bus CPU Interface and uses the ST7712 controller IC from Sitronix to provide all of the necessary control and driver circuitry, cutting component count in space-constrained applications.

The MF128160F18-BF3W measures 1.8inch diagonally, can display up to 262,000 colours and has a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. It provides a selectable 68/80-system 8/9/16/18-bit bus CPU/RGB external interface. The MF176220B19-BF3 is a 1.9inch version with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels, able to display up to 262,000 colours and equipped with 80-system 8/9/16/18-bit bus CPU/RGB I/F for external communication.

The two higher resolution displays employ controllers from Himax, with internal graphics RAM and a window address function, which in combination allow data to be transferred only when the screen requires re-writing, and hence minimise unnecessary data transfers.
