The 64-bit dual-core Xeon® 5100 series processors use Intel®'s 65nm technology to enable higher levels of performance, power efficiency and reliability for embedded, storage and communications platforms. The processors perform better than the company's previous products, exceed the performance of competing x86 devices and offer exceptional performance-per-Watt.
Developers will find this new dual-processor, dual-core architecture to be a highly effective solution for intense computing and I/O workload environments and high-end systems such as single-height (1U) servers and blade servers, SAN and NAS solutions, wireless and voice applications, and high-end medical imaging equipment.
All processors in the range include a 1333MHz Front-Side Bus, supporting increased throughput with faster data transfer between physical memory, I/O and the dual cores. A 4MByte Level-2 cache, shared by both cores, means allocation can be set dynamically between cores based on application load, thereby significantly reducing latency when accessing the most commonly used data. Increased efficiency of L2 cache-to-processor data transfers maximises main memory-to-processor bandwidth and reduces latency, as does use of the company's Smart Memory Access technology.
The new series incorporates Intel® Core™ microarchitecture for energy-efficient performance, enabling equipment manufacturers to balance processing capabilities with power and space constraints. The company's Intelligent Power Capability manages run-time power consumption of all execution cores.
The series includes a number of devices: the 2.33GHz LV5148 with 4MByte shared L2 cache and Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 40W; the 5140 G, with the same speed and cache specifications and TDP of 65W; and the 2.0GHz 5130 G, with TDP of 65W.
These processors are validated with the Intel® 5000P chipset which, compared to the company's previous generation chipsets, delivers higher throughput with dual, point-to-point system buses, faster memory and I/O bandwidth, and Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) support. It also supports Intel® I/O Acceleration Technology to help improve overall system performance and manageability.
In addition to their dual-core, dual-processing capabilities, these processors utilise the company's Virtualisation Technology to enable migration of more environments — including 64-bit operating systems and applications — to virtual environments on the same hardware, helping to reduce the cost of server management and hardware migration.
