Industrial Displays are Readable in Direct Sunlight
 
Transflective technology copes with changing ambient conditions
Two new industrial 31cm (12.1inch) TFT LCDs from Sharp feature transflective technology, making them exceptionally readable even in changing lighting conditions. The LQ121S7LY11 and LQ121S7LY01 displays are designed for applications in mobile measuring and diagnostic equipment for medicine, industrial and environmental analysis, industrial vehicles and control units for factory systems.

Both products are based on Sharp’s Strong Display technology, but also employ the transflective techniques originally developed by the company for use in the automobile sector and which have been used successfully in other equipment such as mobile telephones.



The devices feature a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels and are capable of displaying 262,144 colours.

Transflective technology combines the basic design of a reflective TFT with the brightness of a back-lit transmissive display. In such a design, part of the internal structure of the display is covered with a reflective material. This guarantees very clear image reproduction even in direct sunshine, whilst the active backlight ensures good readability in a darker environment. It is this combination that makes the new displays particularly suitable for any application that requires good readability under sharply fluctuating lighting conditions.

Powerful long-life CCFL tubes provide a display brightness of up to 300cd/m² with a service life of at least 50,000 hours in continuous operation. By comparison, standard backlights have,until now, only been able to offer half-life periods of 25,000 to 40,000 hours.


Transflective TFT Displays

Users of the new industrial displays benefit from Sharp’s expertise developed in the areas of TV LCD panels and mobile applications. For instance, using Advanced Super View (ASV) Technology gives the transflective TFT LCDs an extremely wide viewing angle of 160° in all directions. This is particularly important for industrial advertising displays, which must be perfectly readable from every direction.

In addition to these 12.1inch products, the company plans to add 10.4inch and 15.0inch versions to its transflective industrial line-up in 2007.
