Reduced-Pin and Application-Focused Variants Extend MCU Family
High-performance and reduced-pin Flash micros
Renesas has expanded its popular range of Flash microcontrollers with the announcement of the M32C/87, enhancing the high-performance end of the platform, and four reduced-pin versions based on the M16C core.
M16C Platform
The R8C/2x controllers combine a powerful 16-bit CPU core running at up to 20MHz, with on-chip Flash memory and a wide range of peripherals. Supplied in packages with 20, 32, 48 and 52 pins, these low-cost devices feature between 8KByte and 32KByte of Flash memory. They are particularly suitable for ultra-low-power and battery applications, with current consumption as low as 0.8ľA in wait mode.
Despite their small package size, the new controllers have a wide range of peripheral features, including I˛C, SPI, two USARTs, a dedicated LIN driver, three LVD levels and two internal high/low oscillators. Their multifunction timers can drive three 16-bit PWM outputs with different duty cycles.
A dedicated timer also allows the user to realise real-time clock functions and a 40MHz internal high-speed oscillator can be calibrated down to 1%. A number of features allow the implementation of failsafe functions with reduced external parts count. These include clock-stop detection, SFR protection, dataflash and watchdog timer, all frequently required in next-generation white goods, industrial and security applications.
M32C Platform
At the high-performance end of the device family, the M32C/87 controllers are application-optimised products based on the M32C 32MHz CPU core and available in LQFP packages with 100 or 144 pins. These products are designed to implement efficiently code written in the C language and exhibit high performance in terms of EMS (ElectroMagnetic Susceptibility), low EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and low power consumption.
Intended for consumer and industrial applications, the M32C/87 group of microcontrollers is pinout-compatible with Renesas existing M32C/80 and M16C/60 series. This enables straightforward upgrades of existing systems, giving designers immediate access to a significant increase in performance with minimal design cost.
The devices feature Flash memory densities of between 256Kbyte and 1MByte. Their HDLC communication circuits can be used in applications such as ISDN equipment, while an IrDA interface is also available. They are equipped with an optional number of CAN interfaces (two, one or none) allowing their use in both multiple-bus gateway applications and cost-reduced equipment requiring no CAN functions.
