The NCP1606 from ON Semiconductor is a cost effective, active Power Factor Controller (PFC) designed for use as a pre-converter in electronic ballasts, AC adapters and other low- to mid-power (up to 300W) off-line converters. Housed in a standard DIP-8 or SO-8 package, the device requires minimal external components.

The new device features a CRitical conduction Mode (CRM) scheme to produce a 'unity' power factor, across a wide range of input voltages and power levels. It also integrates comprehensive safety protections, thus allowing the design of a rugged PFC stage.



By operating in voltage mode, the NCP1606 achieves the required performance without the need for a line sensing network. The output voltage is accurately controlled by the means of a high-precision error amplifier (±2.4% reference voltage over the VCC and temperature ranges).

A programmable Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) feature protects the PFC stage against potentially damaging overshoots during start-up or abrupt removal of load. A corresponding Under-Voltage Protection (UVP) circuit disables the PFC stage when the output voltage is excessively low, to guard against a failure in the feedback network.

The device’s power consumption during start-up is less than 50µA, allowing fast and low-loss start-ups. Under normal operating conditions the NCP1606 requires a supply of just 3mA typical. An ultra-low current shutdown mode – in conjunction with a fundamental design that requires no multiplier resistors – will ease compliance with ever-more stringent specifications for low standby losses and higher efficiency such as Energy Star and Blue Angel. Furthermore, the NCP1606 will be offered in two options, the NCP1606A and NCP1606B. The B version will allow further power savings.
