Complete Portfolio from Components to Reference Designs for Motion Control

STMicroelectronics offers a complete portfolio of components, evaluation boards and full reference designs for motor control applications. With the emphasis on smooth operation and efficiency, the company has solutions for BLDC and PM, switched reluctance, vector, stepper, induction and universal motor drives.

Just as important as individual components is the company's range of evaluation, development and reference products. The ST7FMC microcontroller, which is designed specifically for motor control applications and offers significant performance benefits compared to DSP-based MCUs, is at the heart of one such motor control kit designed for use with three-phase drives with power up to 3kW.

BLDC and AC Motor Control: Power Board 300W

The design uses a dedicated STMicroelectronics chipset to ensure smooth, quiet and efficient motor operation: CAD files are available to enable the board layout to be reused directly in production applications. The central control board can be used with any one of a variety of power boards (STEVAL-IHM000xV1), a separation that further improves noise immunity.

BLDC and AC Motor Control: Power Board 1kW

The kit is based on an inverter topology designed for a range of three-phase applications, including AC induction motor, PMDC/AC or BLDC/AC (six-step sensorless) control. The inverter stages of the power boards consist of six rugged, short-circuit protected IGBTs, with current capability determined by the board's power rating.

A dedicated graphical user interface provides for easy configuration, with firmware libraries enabling customisation to meet particular user requirements.

The company's most recent addition to the STR7 microcontroller range, the STR750, itself features a PWM timer that includes three-phase motor control features that simplify the implementation of complex motor control including vector control drive applications.

A dedicated motor control kit, (STR750 MCKIT), provides a readily adaptable implementation of both sensor-based and sensorless vector drives for three-phase AC induction motors and brushless permanent magnet motors.

Users of the kit can use any one of three current sensing methods: isolated current sensing; three shunt resistors; and, in the future, a single shunt resistor. Further design flexibility is provided by the ability to employ tacho, quadrature encoder, or, in the future, sensorless feedback.

The STR750 MCKIT includes the Segger JLink debugger/programmer and stand-alone and GUI-driven firmware libraries compatible with the IAR toolchain: simple start-up files can be used to allow its use with Keil and Raisonance development suites. Software libraries, supplied free-of-charge, will be compliant with MISRA (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association) guidelines.
