Surface-Mount Smart Power Modules Suit White Goods and Pumping Applications
Aimed at 50W to 125W requirements
Fairchild has introduced three new Motion-SPM™ (Smart Power Module) devices in tiny packages, designed to satisfy the requirements of small (50W to 125W) inverter motor drive applications such as water pumps, dishwasher motors and fan motors. The FSB50325S (250V), FSB50250S (500V) and FSB50450S (500V) devices achieve the highest levels of energy efficiency, compactness and low ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI).
The three new devices, in 29mm x 12mm SMD packages, each integrate six Fast-Recovery MOSFET (FRFET), and three half-bridge HVICs for FRFET gate driving. This high level of integration and advanced packaging reduce system size, simplify design, speed time to market and hence cut total system cost. The package is optimised for thermal performance, further easing physical design challenges.
Designers of domestic appliances such as dishwashers need to contend with stringent energy efficiency requirements, which these new devices help them to meet. As well as lower losses – providing both lower power and inherently more reliable operation – the use of FRFETs also offers much improved ruggedness and larger Safe Operation Area (SOA) than that of an IGBT-based power module or one-chip solution. Isolation voltage rating is a high 1500V RMS.
The devices’ SMD packaging not only cuts space requirements, but also gives designers more flexibility by allowing them to use the back-side of the printed circuit board: and it permits the use of standard automated assembly line processes to reduce manufacturing costs. Furthermore, as an alternative to a design based on discrete devices, the new chips eliminate the time-consuming task of testing and qualifying multiple components.
With the introduction of SMD packaging, designers now have the option to choose the most appropriate package, an SMD or Tiny-DIP (Dual In-line Package), for their Motion-SPM applications. The new devices are lead (Pb)-free, meeting or exceeding the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C, and are compliant with European Union regulations now in effect.
