Integrated switches, reset function and EMI reduction
Newly-announced by Texas Instruments, the TPIC74100-Q1 is a switch-mode buck-boost voltage regulator aimed specifically at the automotive market. Equipped with integrated switches for voltage-mode control, the device produces a regulated 5V output from a wide range of input voltages from 1.5V to 40V.
The device can deliver load currents of up to 1A and can achieve voltage regulation as tight as ±2%. In boost mode it can sustain currents of up to 200mA for inputs down to 2V input and 120mA with inputs down to 1.5V. A low-power mode is included for energy-critical applications.
The TPIC74100-Q1 provides a wide range of protection and fail-safe features, including a reset function that can detect and indicate when the 5V output rail is outside the specified tolerance. The reset delay is programmable using an external timing capacitor. The device can also be configured to activate an alarm when the input supply rail falls below a certain value.
The 5V output includes internal current limiting, thus preventing accidental triggering of the reset function when powering a capacitive load. A short to ground on the output activates a self-protection feature that puts the device into 'chopping' mode.
With a 440kHz switching frequency, the device features a programmable slew rate and frequency modulation for EMI minimisation; a clock modulator is used to reduce interference energy within frequency bands of concern.
The use of a thermally-enhanced 20-pin TSSOP allows the TPIC74100-Q1 to be used in conditions of high ambient temperature (from -40°C to +125°C), whilst minimising thermal management issues.
