Safety-Rated Capacitors Suit Telecom and Power Applications
Rated for X and Y use
Yageo has strengthened its multilayer capacitor portfolio with the launch of its new SC series in 1808 and 1812 case sizes. SC series capacitors are certified to IEC384-14 / IEC60950 / EN 132400 for power and telecom applications.
SC devices can be used as X (line-to-line) or Y (line-to-ground) capacitors according to the IEC definitions. All types are rated for operation at 250VAC and feature a dielectric withstand voltage of 1500VAC at 60Hz.
A key specification for these applications are the impulse voltage requirements. X1 capacitors are rated at 4000V, Y2 at 5000V and X2 at 2500V. Impulse responses are specified in terms of standard pulse shapes of 1.2µs/50μs and 10µs/700μs, where the first figure gives a measure of the rise time and the second a measure of the half-value fall time.

These requirements of usage in X and Y configurations cover capacitors rated not more than 1.0µF, 250VAC and 60Hz that are used for filtering EMI/RFI in AC voltage, across-the-line, line bypass and antenna coupling applications. Specific uses would include power supplies, computer networks, digital modems, motors, fans, pumps, facsimile, telephones, radios, televisions, power tools and similar appliance circuits where breakdown of the capacitor results in a risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons.
SC series capacitors are available with industry-standard NPO and X7R characteristics in 1808 and 1812 case sizes. The NPO devices range in value from 2pF upwards and including 470pF; X7R types start at 150pF and include 1.5nF, depending on the safety rating.
