High Performance Serial Flash Memory

Fewer pins, smaller packages and simplified board design
Now available from Arrow, Intel® Serial Flash Memory (S33) complements the company’s existing NOR Flash product portfolio with an industry standard offering for the fast-growing serial Flash market segment. S33 offers fewer pins and smaller package size than traditional parallel Flash and enables designers to improve time to market, reduce costs, simplify board design and save board space.

Offering a common 8-pin SPI interface, the Intel® Serial Flash Memory is offered in 16Mb, 32Mb and 64Mb densities and is hardware- and software-compatible with existing industry offerings for ease of design. The memory is ideal for applications requiring fast Flash access times, as it supports normal read at 33.3MHz and all other operations at 68MHz.

Intel® Serial Flash Memory offers multiple levels of security for a variety of applications. Two eight byte, 30 16byte and one 10byte individually lockable, user-programmable OTP (One-Time Programmable) registers can be used as secure areas to store encrypted identification keys, passwords and other security information. Zero-latency Sector Protect bits protect sectors in the main Flash array against unintended or spurious writes.

Based on proven single-bit-per-cell technology, Intel® Serial Flash Memory takes advantage of the high quality and reliability of Intel’s 130nm process technology. S33 implements a flexible architecture with uniform 64Kbyte memory sectors and eight 8Kbyte parameter blocks and is ideal for both code and data applications. The 8Kbyte parameter blocks can be used to store small amounts of data, such as chipset descriptors in PC applications, or they can be treated like one 64Kbyte memory sector. Additional functionality, such as Program and Erase Fail, bits provide further design flexibility by allowing designers to check for erase and fail status, enabling more efficient file system management.

S33 offers an industry standard package, pin-out and command set for ease of design and accelerated time to market. All memory densities are available in industry standard 16-pin SOIC packaging. The16Mb density offering is also available in an 8-pin SOIC package, allowing customers to choose the 16-pin SOIC package for easy scalability to higher densities or keep their application on the legacy 8-pin SOIC package.

Each of the new devices incorporates a write buffer of 256bytes (128 words) to allow optimum programming performance. Page program operation uses the write buffer to program up to 256bytes within a 256byte-aligned main memory region. A given page can be programmed multiple times between erase cycles.

Long Term Roadmap Commitment
Intel understands that extended life-cycle applications need long term supply for flexibility. Intel’s current Flash memory roadmap has been extended through 2012, reinforcing the company’s continued commitment to embedded market segments. Customers can confidently design with existing embedded products, or with newer products based on leading process technologies.
