RISC Micro Includes Display Controller and all other Features of a Single Chip Industrial PC
Requires only the addition of memory
The SH7203 from Renesas Technology includes all the features needed to implement a single chip industrial PC, requiring only the addition of external memory. Incorporating a high-performance, floating point core, USB v 2.0 interface, display controller and CAN controllers, the device delivers performance of 480MIPS (Dhrystone).
The new device uses the SH2A-FPU core, operating at 200MHz, to achieve a 70% performance increase over the previous generation of SH devices. Its superscalar RISC architecture allows the simultaneous execution of more than one instruction, whilst the provision of 15 register banks confers exceptional interrupt handling performance of just 30ns.
The CPU architecture is optimised to execute code written in C and C++. Most instructions are 16 bits in length, allowing two instructions to be fetched in each 32-bit memory access. This, combined with the device’s 80kByte, on chip RAM memory, ensures fast program execution. The SH7203’s high speed (480Mbit/s) USB interface provides v2.0-compliant Host and Function capabilities.
Its on chip display controller supports LCD panels up to WVGA size (854x480 pixels), enabling low cost configuration of portable devices; a Serial Sound Interface (SSI) makes it particularly suitable for use in portable audio/media players. The peripheral mix is rounded out by two CAN controllers, four serial communication interfaces with 16-stage FIFO and four I²C bus interfaces.
The micro is also suitable for use in industrial and motor control applications and is equipped with an appropriate set of peripherals to satisfy such needs. In particular, the MTU2 (Multi-Function Timer Pulse Unit 2) block includes six 16-bit timer channels (cascadable to 32-bit); supports standard input capture and output compare modes plus phase counting and standard PWM generation. It also includes a powerful three-phase complementary PWM mode with automatic deadtime generation, which dramatically simplifies control of Brushless AC and three-phase induction motors.
Double buffering on the MTU2 duty registers means that duty cycle can be updated at any time; very small and large duty cycles are possible. MTU2 can also measure the real dead time in a system, allowing closed loop control for maximum efficiency.
The device features Renesas H-UDI (JTAG) and AUD on-chip debug interfaces for use with the low cost, in circuit E10A-USB emulator. The HEW (High performance Embedded Workshop) IDE provides an interface to both Renesas and third party compiler tool chains.
To enable faster evaluation and time to market, Renesas has developed the RSK+ (Renesas Starter Kit+) to support the SH7203. The RSK+ has been designed to allow easy access to all on chip peripherals including USB host and function and includes a debug LCD panel as well as a TFT display that is driven directly from the on chip LCD controller.
To complete the RSK+, Renesas has included the E10A USB Lite on chip debugger, 60 day (then 256K code size limited) trial compiler, sample driver code and a full uCLinux BSP (Board Support Package). This makes the RSK+ one of the most comprehensive and complete evaluation / development systems in its class. The RSK7203+ also features onboard ethernet as an addition to the comprehensive SH7203 peripheral set.
The SH7203 is supplied in a 240-pin Quad Flat Pack (QFP). A BGA option is planned.
