A System Level Approach to Security and Video Surveillance

Texas Instruments' solutions in the security and video surveillance market focus on system solutions in four distinct areas: IP cameras; Digital Video Recorders (DVRs); video servers; network video recorders. The breadth of the Texas Instruments product portfolio gives designers the ability to differentiate their products in both hardware and software.



The range includes audio solutions for designers of Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, ranging in quality from telephony standard to CD audio. The company offers both mono voice and low power stereo audio codecs.

Texas Instruments also offers a range of flexible, programmable clock multipliers with leading performance, flexibility and ease of use.

The DM6446 DaVinci device is a digital video system solution supporting encoding, network, video analytics, motion detection and other security related functions such as encryption and watermarking. The DaVinci Platform provides optimised software, development tools, integrated silicon and support to simplify design and stimulate innovation in less time.

The DaVinci software offering includes interoperable, optimised, production ready, standards based video and audio codecs that use DSP and integrated accelerators. These are built into configurable frameworks and presented via published Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) within popular operating systems for rapid software implementation. A complete range of development kits, reference designs and comprehensive ARM/DSP Integrated Development Environments are also available to speed design and development.

The DaVinci processors themselves are scalable, programmable DSPs and DSP based SoCs (Systems on Chip) tailored from DSP cores, accelerators, peripherals and ARM processors optimised to match various price, performance, and feature requirements in a spectrum of digital video end products. The devices are supported by a third party partner network of system integrators, hardware and software solution providers, with intimate knowledge of the technology and video system expertise to help bring designs to market faster.

Video decode can be accomplished by using the TI TVP515X series of low power NTSC/PAL video decoders. Conversion of digital component video signals into the analogue domain can be achieved with the THS8200, a complete video back end D/A solution.

Other Texas Instruments products that can contribute to better video performance are its high speed CMOS op-amps. Rail to rail devices can be of benefit to customers implementing Pan, Tilt, Zoom (PTZ) functions. The company’s logic devices can be used for expanded video control or connectivity such as RS-232 for control functionality.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology can be a further differentiator in IP camera systems because it reduces the cost of the related infrastructure. Texas Instruments' PoE solutions include an 802.3f compliant, highly integrated power supply for IP Cameras and a pre-standard, high power PoE solution for IP cameras that can be used to power additional functions such as PTZ motors and heaters.
