New Optically Isolated Gate Drivers for Industrial Motor Applications

Avago’s ACPL-332J and ACPL-331J gate drive optocouplers provide isolated gate drive functions for IGBTs and MOSFETs in applications such as industrial motors and inverters, Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). Their high output current and high level of integration help designers to reduce product design cycle time while improving application efficiency, safety and performance.



The new devices enable engineers to develop reliable yet cost effective motor control systems with better protection, enhanced precision and the ability to operate in noisy environments. They feature active Miller clamping (1.0A typical), eliminating the need for a negative gate drive and saving negative power supply and PCB space. Other integrated features include Vce desaturation detection to protect against over current situations, Under Voltage Lock Out (UVLO) protection, IGBT shut down and isolated, open collector fault feedback.

Based on GaAsP LEDs, the ACPL-332J and -331J support a wide operating voltage range (15V to 30V) and industrial temperature range (-40°C to +100°C). An enhanced ability to function in noisy environments is conferred by the devices’ industry leading Common Mode Rejection (CMR) specifications, 15kV/µs at a Vcm of 1.5kV.

The ACPL-332J and -331J provide 2.5A and 1.5A drive, respectively. Both devices are CSA approved, with approvals also pending for UL1577 and IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2.
