LED Drivers Provide Integrated Protection

The TLE 4242 G and TLE 4241 GM from Infineon Technologies are integrated adjustable constant current sources designed to supply LEDs under the severe conditions of automotive applications.



The TLE 4242 G can drive loads of up to 500mA, with output current level adjusted via an external resistor. The TLE 4241 GM incorporates a number of additional modes of user control, including a SET input and PWM modulation.

The TLE 4242 G is designed to supply high power LEDs (such as the Osram Dragon LA W57B), providing constant brightness and extended LED lifetime. It is delivered in the Surface Mount (SM) Plastic Transistor single Outline (P-TO263-7-1) package. The TLE 4241 GM is aimed at applications with lower current requirements of up to 70mA and is provided in the very small Plastic Dual Small Outline (P-DSO-8-9, or Micro 8) package.

Both ICs are designed to maintain their output current virtually independent from changes in the load and supply voltage. They include protection circuits that prevent damage to the device in case of overload, short circuit, reverse polarity and overheating. The connected LEDs are themselves protected against reverse polarity as well as excess voltages up to 45V.

An integrated PWM input permits LED brightness regulation by pulse width modulation. Due to the high input impedance of the PWM input, the LED driver can also be operated as a protected high side switch.
