Processors Provide Power Efficiency and Security for Portable, Networked Applications
Scalable series allows designers to innovate in low cost designs
Analog Devices’ new ADSP-BF52x family is a scalable series of processors optimised for demanding portable applications. These new Blackfin® devices offer the performance associated with high end media players at the cost structure of MP3 player chipsets, while offering industry leading power efficiency of up to 0.16mW/MHz at 250MHz.
The family offers a high degree of flexibility in terms of cost, feature set and power consumption for designers of Portable Media Players (PMPs), Voice over IP (VoIP) phones, IP cameras and mobile TV devices. All incorporate Analog Devices’ Lockbox Secure Technology, allowing designers to implement next generation security features such as safeguarding Intellectual Property and providing protected e-commerce and social networking on digital media devices.
ADSP-BF52x devices are available in a broad range of specifications, including a high performance/low power series (ADSP-BF527/BF525/BF522) operating at 600MHz and an ultra low power series running at up to 400MHz. Power efficiency is enhanced by the use of an internal voltage regulator and the use of an advanced manufacturing process. These dynamic power management capabilities scale power consumption on the chip to match the MIPS necessary for the function being executed at the time.
Bill Of Materials (BOM) cost, development time and board size are minimised by the inclusion of an on chip SDRAM controller and a wide range of peripheral options. These include High Speed USB On The Go (OTG), 10/100 Ethernet, host DMA port, on-chip PLL and integrated NAND Flash controller. Up to 48 General Purpose I/O (GPIO) ports support 1.8V, 2.5V or 3.3V interfacing. The ADSP-BF527C/BF525C/BF522C versions also feature an embedded, low power stereo audio codec for use in space constrained applications such as PMPs and IP phones.
The Blackfin processors’ RISC like register and instruction model provides inherent ease of programming via a familiar environment. This intuitive programming model is supplemented by a wide range of industry leading tools, starter kits and support. These include the CROSSCORE® software and hardware tools, VisualDSP++® Integrated Development and Debug Environment (IDDE), emulators and EZ-KIT Lite evaluation kits.
The new ADSP-BF52x devices are supplied in 289-ball Mini Ball Grid Array (MBGA) packages.
