Vishay Intertechnology offers a wide range of ambient light sensors in Surface Mount (SM) and leaded packages. These devices play a key role in ensuring power efficiency and effective Human Machine Interface (HMI) design in applications ranging from PDAs to traffic control and external lighting. ![]() These components are sensitive to the visible light spectrum, with characteristics that closely match the human eye. Integral filtering effectively eliminates the influence of Infra Red (IR) light. The broad Vishay Intertechnology portfolio includes a choice of half sensitivity angles (from ±20° to ±65°) to accommodate the full variety of applications. For use in automotive environments, devices are qualified according to AEC-Q101. With simple two-pin connections, these sensors are simple to use and do not require an external amplifier. Package options include 5mm and 3mm leaded, 0805 and 1206 SM packages. ![]() Specific devices include the TEMT6200FX01, a silicon NPN epitaxial planar phototransistor in a miniature transparent 0805 lead free SM package, featuring improved levels of infrared filtering. The TEMD5510FX01 and TEMD6010FX01 are high speed, high sensitivity PIN photodiodes, also supplied in SM packaging. Thanks to their high sensitivity and wide angle of half sensitivity, applications for these three devices are in ambient light sensing, display backlight dimming in auto dashboards, steering of display brightness for industrial displays (for instance cash machines). The TEPT4400, TEPT5600 and TEPT5700 devices are more suitable for applications that require a narrow angle of half sensitivity (down to ±20°) such as backlight dimming, twilight switching and Head Up Displays (HUDs). They are also suitable as replacements for cadmium sulphide photoresistors, which are now banned under EU RoHS regulations. The TEMT6000 component features high sensitivity (peak collector emitter current of 50µA) and is optimised for controlling LCD display intensity and keypad backlighting of mobile devices and for industrial on/off lighting operation. To assist designers in deploying its ambient light sensors, Vishay Intertechnology provides a development kit including a board containing the customer’s selected sensor, an analogue to digital converter, and I2C bus interface. An adapter board converts I2C to RS-232 for easy connection to a PC. The package also includes easy to use Windows based software. Features
