Relay Design Evolves to Address New Opportunities

Options include small size, low noise, low power and high inrush versions
Omron Electronic Components Europe provides a variety of relay components that address advanced requirements such as small size, low noise, low power consumption and high performance. Examples include the small, lightweight G9EB devices, the G9YA, for base station and antenna applications, the low noise G5RL-LN and the G5RL-HR with high resistance to inrush currents.

The new G9EB relays are believed to be the industry's smallest and lightest models in the 400VDC, 25A class. Just 25mm x 60mm x 58mm in size and weighing around 135g, they are approximately half the volume and one third the mass of competing devices.

The devices’ sealed, gas-filled construction provides an arc cooling effect, which, when combined with patented switching technology and the use of a permanent magnet, allows space savings by reducing the need for arc space. These design features also eliminate the need to ensure correct polarity in the main circuit.

Omron’s G9YA is characterised for use at up to 25.6GHz, and is particularly suitable for mobile communications base station and antenna applications. Housed in a 34mm x 13.2mm x 37.8mm package, the device has an output power rating of 120W at 3GHz and requires just 500mW or 700mW at 12VDC to operate, depending on the version used.

Audible switching noise can be an issue in home electrical and electronic goods from panel heaters to video games. The latest quiet relays, such as Omron’s G5RL-LN, offer reductions in switching noise of around 25%, to typically just 45dB at a distance of 15cm, making them effectively inaudible.

Another growing sector is energy efficient lighting, and this kind of application is characterised by high inrush currents. Relays such as the Omron G5RL-HR can handle currents of up to 100A, but are still packaged in the standard G5RL case.

A great many industrial applications require relays to conform to a standard footprint, but can be miniaturised by the use of a low profile component. Omron offers 8A, 250VAC relays for applications such as boiler control, with heights of just 12.3mm, some 20% lower than the previous generation of devices.
