Compact MCU Solutions for Motor Control

20-pin and 32-pin low-cost solutions for appliances
The R8C26/27/28/29 microcontrollers from Renesas are particularly suitable for space-constrained designs that need to perform cost-effective motor control functions. Part of the R8C Tiny family of devices, these controllers are supplied in low-cost 20-pin or 32-pin Low profile Quad Flat Packages (LQFPs).

The R8C Tiny series MCUs include a fast 16-bit M16C core with 8-bit buses for a lower-cost solution and up to 32KByte of Flash memory. The R8C26/27/28/29 devices operate at up to 20MHz and are equipped with a range of On-Chip Oscillator (OCO), timer and Serial I/O features specifically intended to facilitate the implementation of single-phase and three-phase motor control.

In addition to three 8-bit timers, one with real-time clock, the devices include a 16-bit single-channel timer with capture and compare that can be used in three-phase PWM control. These MCUs are also highly suitable for use in single-phase applications such as 120° rectangular drives for BrushLess DC (BLDC) motors, with rotor position sensing either via back EMF or Hall effect sensor. Also supported are single-phase induction and DC motor designs with encoder position detection.

The R8C26/27/28/29 MCUs include up to 12 analogue inputs that can be used for current sensing, as interfaces to environmental monitoring circuits such as thermostats or pressure sensors and for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) purposes. Four clock sources are available on-chip, including the 40MHz, 1% OCO and supplementary 125kHz OCO; four external and ten internal hardware interrupts are supported.

With power consumption as low as 0.8ľA in standby, and the ability to function at supply voltages down to 2.2V, the R8C Tiny series is well suited to power-sensitive battery-powered applications. It will also be used in electronic household appliances, office equipment, audio equipment, consumer products and the automotive industry. It boasts a range of safety and control features required in applications such as Power On Reset (POR), Low Voltage Detection (LVD) and a WatchDog Timer (WDT); and exhibits excellent EMI and ESD characteristics.

In addition to program Flash, the devices include on-chip RAM capacities from 512Byte to 1.5KByte, and two 1Kbyte banks of Flash data memory.
