Highly Compact, Fully Integrated Synchronous Buck Regulator is 95% Efficient

First in a new family of all-in-one regulators from Fairchild Semiconductor, the Moulded Leadless Packaged (MLP) FAN2106 offers up to 95% efficiency to improve system thermal performance, while substantially simplifying designs.
Part of Fairchild Semiconductor’s TinyBuck series of DC/DC buck regulators, the FAN2106 integrates an advanced analogue IC, MOSFETs and a boot diode into an ultra-compact MLP measuring only 5mm x 6mm. Requiring approximately 50% less board space than discrete solutions, it replaces one buck controller, two gate drivers and two MOSFETs. Fairchild believes it to be the smallest 6A, 24V-input integrated synchronous buck regulator currently on the market.
The FAN2106 achieves up to 95% power efficiency, the high-side MOSFET featuring a drain-source on-resistance of 30mΩ, while the corresponding low-side specification is 14mΩ. The device accepts input across a wide voltage range of 3V to 24V and produces an output voltage as low as 0.8V, while delivering up to 6A output current.
The device is aimed at a broad range of Point-of-Load (PoL) applications, including set-top boxes, cable modems, in-cabin GPS, portable medical equipment, LED lighting and industrial instrumentation, ultra-mobile PCs, notebooks and blade servers. For increased design flexibility, the FAN2106 features a programmable switching frequency. Current limit and loop response parameters are externally controllable, giving designers more choice in their selection of output filter components and transient response. The device uses a summing current mode modulator with lossless current sensing for current feedback and overcurrent and includes voltage feedforward.
Additional features include UnderVoltage LockOut (UVLO), overvoltage, overcurrent and thermal protection circuitry. A selectable power-saving mode extends system battery life at light loads. The device is RoHS compliant.
