Synchronous Buck Converter Increases Power Density

The NCP3102 is a high efficiency, 10A DC/DC switching buck converter designed for telecommunications, networking and server boards. It offers a highly integrated solution which simplifies embedded power designs, and is a cost effective alternative to older module-based solutions, reducing Bill of Materials (BoM) costs by around 40%.



Designed to operate from supply voltages from 5V to 12V, the device can produce an output voltage as low as 0.8V. The NCP3102 can continuously output 10A through MOSFET switches driven by an internally set 275kHz oscillator. The 40-pin device provides a high level of integration, cutting the requirements for external components and reducing the overall size and cost of power supply designs.

The NCP3102 also incorporates an externally compensated transconductance error amplifier and a soft start function that is programmable via an external capacitor. Protection features include programmable short circuit protection and UnderVoltage LockOut (UVLO). Output voltage and current limit are set by external resistors.

The device is an example of the growing tendency for power management ICs and 'hybrid' products to displace DC/DC modules in many applications. This move is particularly pronounced in the 5A to 10A current output range, where sales of such ICs are predicted to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of over 16%.

The NCP3102 is available in a 40-pin Quad Flat package No leads (QFN).
