Coin Cell Supercapacitors can Power Real Time Clock and Memory Circuits

5.5V units can replace secondary lithium batteries
Cooper Bussmann has extended its PowerStor® line of supercapacitor products to include 5.5V coin cell packages. These products address the growing demand to provide back-up power for real time clock and memory devices.

For many years, secondary lithium batteries have been used in back-up power applications for volatile memories and Real Time Clocks (RTCs). However, such batteries have a relatively short cycle life, a limited operating temperature range and can be difficult to dispose of at the end of their life.

High-capacitance supercapacitors solve these problems, offering near infinite life cycle, rapid charging and a wide operating temperature range. In addition, because supercapacitors are constructed using aluminium, carbon and organic electrolyte, they allow much more straightforward end of life disposal techniques.

These characteristics allow supercapacitors to be used in applications that require reliability over a very long operating life. Although they have lower energy-storage capacity than batteries, they nevertheless provide hold-up times between several hours and a few days. Critical functions can therefore be continued or completed in a controlled manner during battery swap out or mains failures.

PowerStor KR series coin cells offer high capacitance in industry standard horizontal, vertical and cylindrical package styles, which fit well with modern automated production techniques, allowing easier and more reliable assembly. These RoHS compliant devices are available in six capacitance values from 0.1F to 1.5F with a working voltage of 5.5V and a surge voltage capability of 6.3V. The devices have a lifetime in excess of 10 years at an operating temperature range of -25°C to +70°C.

The KR Series is designed for use in products such as DVD players, Set Top Boxes (STBs), digital radios, photocopiers, computers and peripherals, and Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) controls. The wider PowerStor range also offers standard and custom supercapacitors with values of up to 100F that can be configured to suit a wide variety of applications ranging from toys to automated meter readers and hybrid vehicles.

KR series supercapacitors provide ultra low leakage current levels, allowing their use in battery powered equipment where loading needs to be minimised to prolong operating time. Their high energy density (in excess of 10J/cm³) permits the use of small, 11.5mm to 21.5mm diameter, low profile packages with 5mm and 7.5mm thickness.
