SH4A processor offers Pentium-class performance at very low-power
SH7780 from Renesas Technology Europe is a high-end processor offering Pentium-class performance at low cost and very low power, only 2.5W, with long life.
Renesas’ SH7780 features a 2.8GFLOPS Floating-Point Unit (FPU), to facilitate graphics algorithms, and integrated PCI. The SH7780 contains a SH-4A CPU and FPU core, offering a maximum operating frequency of 400MHz and 2.8GFLOPS / 720-MIPS performance. It has a 64Kbyte associative cache memory divided into two 32Kbyte areas, one each for instructions and data. The 128-bit internal real-time router bus (SuperHyway) optimises on-chip data traffic.
The SH7780 contains three independent external buses, a 32-bit DDR320-SDRAM controller, standard NOR Flash, NAND Flash controller, PCMCIA and ATAPI controllers. A multimedia card interface and a 32-bit PCI 2.2 controller at 33/66MHz, two-channel serial interface with on-chip FIFO, and an Audio Codec Interface completes the high power features.
The PCI and DDR SDRAM buses have their own independent interfaces, which prevents system bottlenecks and supports fast real-time tasks and continuous multimedia transfers run in parallel.
The powerful FPU calculates 3D graphics using internal DSP-like instructions (MAC, DIV, SQRT), supports single and double precision (64-bit) and has a 10-stage pipeline for optimised performance.
Demanding application software, like audio codecs or high quality voice recognition, can operate without an external DSP. Other devices can connect via the PCI bus. The superscalar SH7780 CPU engine, supports sophisticated operating systems such as WinCE, Linux, µItron, QNX, VxWorks and other real time OS.
Various power-down modes, a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and the SH7780’s long term availability ideally suits SH7780 to high performance industrial and multimedia applications such as network terminals, infotainment systems, machine control or digital home electronics.
The SH4A core’s instruction set is upwards compatible to SH4 and SH3 processors to ease code reuse and reduce time to market.
