Range of CAN Transceivers is Automotive Qualified

Eight-pin IC is drop-in replacement for common devices
A range of Controller Area Network (CAN) products from Texas Instruments offers full qualification to automotive grade Q100. The range includes the SN65HVD1040-Q1, a high speed transceiver that meets or exceeds the specifications of the ISO 11898 standard and is an enhanced drop-in replacement for commonly used eight-pin devices.

The SN65HVD1040-Q1 provides differential transmit capability to the communications bus and differential receive capability to a CAN controller at signalling rates of up to 1Mbit/s.

Designed for operation in the harsh environments commonly encountered in automotive applications, the device features overtemperature, cross-wire, over-voltage and 'loss of ground' protection from -27V to +40V. In addition, it boasts a common mode range of -12V to +12V and can withstand voltage transients from -200V to +200V, in accordance with ISO7637.

The device functions in two modes, user-selectable according to the voltage applied to pin eight of the device. In high-speed mode, the device is fully operational; in standby mode, the device enters a low current state with the receiver remaining active as a bus monitor. In this mode, a dominant bit of 5ms duration or greater on the bus is passed by the bus-monitor circuit to the receiver output. The local protocol controller can then reactivate the device when it needs to transmit to the bus.

A dominant time-out circuit in the SN65HVD1040 prevents the driver from blocking network communication with a hardware or software failure. The time-out circuit is triggered by a falling edge applied to pin one of the device. If no subsequent rising edge is seen before the time-out constant of the circuit expires, the driver is disabled. The circuit is then reset by the next rising edge.

The SN65HVD1040 is characterised for operation from -40°C to +125°C and is supplied in Small Outline Integrated Circuit (SOIC) packaging.
