Sub-SMA Diodes Require 50% Less Board Space

Taiwan Semiconductor has announced five new product ranges in space-saving sub-SMA packages. The devices, which include standard, fast and ultra-fast Zener/Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) and Schottky options, require 50% less board space than SMA-packaged alternatives.

All of the devices provide pad compatibility with well-known device footprints such as SOD87 and SOD-123. Offering current handling of up to 1A in contrast to competing 0.7A devices, they are lead-free and RoHS compliant. As well as being smaller, they represent a more cost-effective solution than competing SMA devices.

Featuring low power loss and consequent high efficiency, all of the new sub-SMA ranges are supplied with pure tin plated terminals on 12mm tape in accordance with EIA STD RS-481.

The standard rectifier range (S1AL to S1ML) is available in 50V to 1000V versions, with current handling of up to 1A. The devices are glass passivated junction chips specified to operate within the -55°C to +150°C temperature range.

The SS12L to SS14L Schottky rectifiers are also 1A devices, with voltage ratings of 20V to 40V.



Two product ranges cater for applications that require faster switching. The RSFAL to RSFML family are 0.5A products with reverse recovery time (T_rr) of 150ns to 500ns and voltage ratings ranging from 50V to 1000V. The ES1AL to ES1JL ultra-fast devices offer 1A current handling and 50V to 600V voltage ratings with T_rr of just 35ns.

The BZD27C series of Zener/TVS products provides power handling of up to 800mW for voltages ranging between 12V and 240V. With low leakage current and excellent stability, the devices can be used for surge current protection across an operating temperature range of -65°C to +175°C.
