Light, Rugged and Reliable, High-Performance and Low-Power Storage
Samsung extends its Solid State Drives product range
Samsung’s 64GB NAND Flash-based Solid State Disk (SSD) is higher power and more reliable than common SSD.
SSD is an advanced NAND Flash-based replacement for traditional hard disk drives, taking advantage of the company’s memory technology leadership. Samsung has two SSD product ranges, 1.8inch and 2.5inch; both SSDs offer 8GB to 64GB PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) and SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) options.
These new 64GB NAND Flash-based SSDs use an 8Gbit Single Level Cell (SLC) NAND because it delivers significantly higher performance than other SSDs can. For example, SLC is around 10 times more reliable than Multi Level Cell (MLC) at write/erase tasks on NAND Flash memory. MLC is more common in SSDs because its lower cost makes it popular with manufacturers for NAND Flash production but Samsung uses expensive SLC technology exclusively in its SSD. SLC is less accident-sensitive and components are both faster in operation and provide longer lifetimes.
Samsung’s new 64GB SLC Flash SSD has enhanced SSD read/write speed by 20%/60%, respectively, compared to the 32GB SSD Samsung launched last year. This also represents a massive performance improvement and has other advantages over traditional hard disks.
SSD's advantages over rotating magnetic media include significantly lower power consumption, more ruggedness, lower weight, zero heat generation, high reliability and outstanding performance. Read/write speed is double that for 2.5inch hard disks, reducing application or program operating times and system boot time. Reliability is similarly impressive if compared to mechanical media, offering 1million hours of MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures); SSDs also provide maximum resistance against impact at levels of 1,500G. They are also ‘greener’, using less than 20% of the power a hard disk drive would consume.
