MCUs Suit High-Speed Industrial and Connected Applications
32-bit RISC Micros offer Ethernet and Flash
The SH7619 32-bit SuperH™ 32-bit RISC microprocessor from Renesas incorporates an Ethernet PHY (PHYsical layer) transceiver and Ethernet controller, for use in a wide range of networked applications. Also in the SuperH series, the company believes its SH7211 to be the industry’s fastest Flash-based microcontroller. Both of these devices are now available from Arrow.
The SH7619 device is particularly suited to use in Audio Visual, Office Automation and Factory Automation (AV, OA and FA) applications, which require optimised cost performance. The chip’s SH-2 CPU core features a maximum operating frequency of 125MHz and high processing performance of 163MIPS. The on-chip Ethernet controller is fully compliant with IEEE802.3.
System integration is eased by the provision of a host interface function which allows the SH7619 to appear as an SRAM-equivalent device. This permits fast direct read and write access between the SH MCU and external system components. Data downloaded via an Ethernet connection can therefore be transferred to a main microprocessor at high speed.
Renesas recently announced a µC/OS-II Board Support Package (BSP) for the M3A-HS19G59 development board, based on the SH7619. The BSP includes a TCP/IP stack, in addition to the µC/OS-II real time kernel, a portable ROMable, scalable, pre-emptive real-time, multitasking kernel for microprocessors and microcontrollers. It can be downloaded on www.micrium.com.
Supplied in a small (13mm x 13mm) 176-pin BGA package, the device includes a general-purpose DMA controller to provide high-speed data transfer to and from external memory for increased network data throughput. In addition, the provision of on-chip serial I/O interfaces allows connection to a variety of external devices.
The SH7211 device incorporates an SH-2A core and operates at up to 160MHz. It is designed for high performance industrial systems with tight real-time requirements, such as electrical motor drives. The device is equipped with two sophisticated timer units (MTU2, MTU2S), allowing it to drive two electrical motors or to perform general-purpose timer tasks.
It also includes a two-channel Compare-Match Timer (CMT), plus an eight-channel 12-bit fast Analogue to Digital Converter (ADC) with sample and hold, and a two-channel 8-bit Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC)
Employing Renesas’ fast MONOS Flash technology, the MCU has two interleaved banks of Flash memory, with a cache to accelerate code execution even further. The superscalar SH-2A core delivers performance of over 350 Dhrystone MIPS at 160MHz. In keeping with the requirements of real-time systems, the SH7211 can react to interrupts in less than 40ns. An integrated Bus State Controller (BSC) supports SRAM, Flash and SDRAM, multiplexed and non-multiplexed buses.
