Safety Capacitors Protect Circuits and People and Cut EMI

1808 and 1812 sizes
Safety Certified capacitors are designed to withstand high impulse voltages in applications where human beings might be exposed to voltage surges. The function of these capacitors is to shunt the energy from the impulse to ground, protecting the circuit from the surge. Walsin produces a range of products that are suitable for the task.

Walsin safety capacitors are compliant to major standard tests, including IEC60384-14, EN132400 and IEC 60950. The range includes both X capacitor versions, for use in situations where failure would not lead to danger of electric shock (for instance line to line applications); and Y capacitor variants, intended for situations where failure could lead to danger of electric shock (primarily line to ground applications).

Rated at 250V RMS, the devices are available in 1808 and 1812 packages. Various capacitance ranges are available, from 3.9pF to 4,700pF.

As well as shielding humans from shock, these capacitors are used to provide insulation between circuitry connected to the telecom network voltage and circuits that are connected to protective earth: the function being to protect both circuits from harm.

Devices can also form effective EMI filters at the input of a circuit. Because they form an isolation barrier, they have to be able to withstand high impulse voltages in case of a power surge. Typical examples include capacitors connecting the tip or ring lines to ground in telecom applications (using X2Y3 or X1Y2 types) and capacitors used to filter the input side of an AC to DC power supply (using X1Y2 ratings).
