25mm x 25mm module integrates baseband and front end
STMicroelectronics offers a complete GPS reference design for consumer and automotive markets, based on its STA2058 Teseo GPS baseband coupled with an STA5620 single-chip RF front end. The reference design, supported with a software library, allows rapid product development.
The 25mm x 25mm reference design module is particularly suited to hand-held and Portable Navigation Device (PND) applications. The use of the STA2058 Teseo chip confers high GPS sensitivity of -159dBm in tracking and -146dBm in warm start acquisition.
The Teseo device includes up to 256KByte embedded Flash memory. This allows it to store GPS receiver code, including tracking, acquisition, navigation and data output routines supplied by STMicroelectronics, as well as user-generated application software.
The STA5620 front end uses a low-IF architecture to down-convert a GPS L1 signal from 1575.42MHz to 4.092MHz. The device is designed to require the minimum of external components, integrating its own PLL/oscillator.
The STA2058 is itself based on an ARM7TDMI™ 32-bit microcontroller core and a High-Performance GPS engine (HPGPS) with a wide range of peripherals including 48 GPIOs, two I²Cs, one USB, two CANs, and a four-channel ADC. In addition, four UARTs and two SPIs are provided, with the option of data output in the standard National Marine Electronics Association format.
The device achieves a 2m autonomous positioning accuracy, with fast positioning-acquisition times of less than 2.5s for hot start and less than a second for reacquisition. It fully supports both the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).
Already available in Low profile Quad Flat Pack (LQFP) or Ball Grid Array (BGA) packages, ST Microelectronics will also offer the baseband and RF front-end devices integrated in a multi-chip module, designated STA8058. In keeping with their intended use within vehicles, Teseo devices are automotive grade compliant (AEC-Q100) and characterised for use within the -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range.
