Low-Cost Transmitter Enables Direct Fibre Connection
 
650nm LED offers speeds up to 100Mbit/s
The SFH757 from Avago Technologies is a low-cost transmitter for simple optical data communications via Polymer Optical Fibre (POF). The device is available in two versions, allowing interfacing with standard 2.2mm POF either by gluing or via an axial locking screw (SFH757V).



This very robust 650nm LED can be used for communication at speeds of up to 100Mbit/s, making it suitable for use in household and industrial electronics, optical networks, and any situation where EMI is a concern.

The base version is supplied in a transparent plastic package with an aperture in which a 2.2mm fibre-end can be inserted and fixed with glue, for an easy, cost-effective coupling. The device includes a moulded microlens for efficient coupling. A variant in a V-housing allows easy coupling of POF without connectors via a screw fixing.

The device is supplied in a light-tight housing for superior cross-talk, and is particularly useful for high voltage isolation, for instance in IGBT control and lightning protection systems. It is compatible with automated assembly, can be wave soldered, and is RoHS compliant.
