Complete DC/DC Regulator System in SM Package Satisfies Military Needs
Operates from -55șC to +125șC and weighs only 1.7g
Linear Technology Corporations LTM4600HVMPV is a complete and encapsulated 10A switching DC/DC regulator system designed for rugged military and avionics applications and weighing only 1.7g. The first device in a new family of ”Module (micromodule) DC/DC regulators, its package resembles a surface mount IC, while its circuit topology resembles a simple linear regulator.
Comprised entirely of Linear Technology silicon and supported by rigorous in-house testing, the LTM4600HVMPV combines component-level reliability and industry-leading performance. It is fully tested over the -55șC to +125șC temperature range including start-up at -55șC. Tests have demonstrated zero-failure operation for 500,360 device cycles for thermal shock from -65șC to +150șC; 6,995,540 device hours for power cycle from +50șC to +100șC; 888,106 device cycles for board mount temperature cycle from -40șC to +125șC and for solder shock at +245șC.
Tested to mechanical shock levels of 1500g, the device is supplied in a 15mm x 15mm x 2.8mm military plastic LGA (Land Grid Array) package. This package has been qualified by military system designers as the preferred option for high power DC/DC solutions because it has lower thermal impedance than a similar size BGA (Ball Grid Array). In addition, the plastic package meets Linear Technologys military plastic standard.
The LTM4600HVMPV is a synchronous switch mode step-down regulator with built-in inductor, supporting power components and compensation circuitry. The device operates from an input supply range of 4.5V to 28V, producing a regulated output voltage from 0.6V to 5V. With efficiency as high as 92%, it can deliver a load current of 10A continuous and 14A peak.
The device dramatically simplifies power supply design and construction, requiring only input and output bulk capacitors and a resistor to set the output voltage. Its standard LGA package can be handled and assembled like any IC. Moreover, its low profile design permits the device to be soldered onto the back side of a printed circuit board, freeing space on the front side of the board. For board insertion and assembly, the device requires standard tooling and pick and place machines. The LTM4600HVMPV is self-protected against output overvoltage and short circuit conditions.
