2A and 3A Dual-Output Switchers Suit Digital TV and Set-Top Box Designs

Converters integrate FETs to simplify design
Four dual-output SWIFT™ DC/DC step-down converters from Texas Instruments Incorporated feature integrated FETs and deliver 2A and 3A of continuous output current. Supporting input voltages of 4.5V to 28V, these monolithic devices simplify and reduce the cost of designing point-of-load systems for devices such as High Definition TeleVisions (HDTVs), set-top boxes and other consumer electronic systems.

Designated the TPS54283, TPS54286, TPS54383 and TPS54386, the converters reduce input capacitance by switching each output 180° out of phase. Switching frequency is either 300kHz or 600kHz. The output currents are either two times 2A or two times 6A. The devices use current-mode control and integrate the required compensation components to reduce external part-count.

A single sequencing pin helps designers meet critical sequencing requirements without additional circuitry by allowing the user to select which output voltage ramps up first or to program both output voltages to ramp up ratiometrically.

The converters provide high efficiency (over 90%) and 1.5% output voltage accuracy (down to 0.8V) on each output. With three selectable levels of over-current protection, low on-resistance and a thermal shutdown of +145°C, the devices excel in hot environments where good thermal performance is needed. A typical example is a DLP® HDTV that operates without the use of a cooling fan.

All four devices are supplied in highly reliable, thermally enhanced 5mm x 6mm, 14-pin HTTSOP packages.

Designers who use the SWIFT converters can take advantage of interactive software and other design resources. Various application notes and evaluation modules are available for the series.
