European Switch Engineering Centre Enables Custom Designs

Detection switches will meet European specifications
Following the opening of Omron's Switch Engineering Centre in Munich, Arrow customers with mid- to high-volume applications can have detection switches modified to suit their specific applications. The centre can undertake modifications ranging from the development of an alternative lever, to redesign of the case, terminals or wiring harness.

These switch solutions can be based on any of Omron's extensive range of standard devices, including the popular D3V family, the D2HW for automotive and the recently introduced ultra-miniature D3SH.

The Munich Centre brings to Europe the expertise of Omron's main switch factory in Kurayoshi and is the first of its type outside Japan. In addition to product customisation, the facility's team of four engineers will also design solutions to meet European standards and specifications.

Omron D3V miniature switches are V style devices designed for use in a wide range of applications, from home appliances and office equipment to HVAC systems and vending machines. The D3V series is available with an extensive range of operating forces, current ratings, lever options, fitting options and terminal types.

D3V versions have been introduced for use in demanding, high temperature environments. Designed to withstand temperatures of up to +200ºC, the D3V-T models use PolyPhenylene Sulphide (PPS) plastic moulding material for their excellent high temperature performance, inherent flame retardance and chemical resistance. The D3V GWT (Glow Wire Test) approved versions are designed for the home appliance market. Further product development is taking place in Munich and new D3V versions, including a RAST 2.5 terminal type, are expected in the near future.

The D3SH is the smallest detection switch on the market, an ultra small surface mount design featuring a unique mechanism for high contact reliability. Measuring just 3mm x 3.4mm x 0.9mm, the D3SH is aimed at miniaturised and lightweight applications. Features include a high durability of greater than 100,000 operations, low operating force less than 0.3N, and two-way detection.

For automotive and other wide temperature range applications, the D2HW series is recommended for its leaf lever actuation that gives guaranteed performance quality in cold climates. A wide range of actuation options, including hinged and extended-hinged levers, as well as non-levered pin plunger types, are available. They may be actuated by direct contact with a moving moulding, or via a cam. The actuating forces do not necessarily act in a plane parallel to the axis of the plunger, so robust mechanical design is required to ensure the reliability and longevity of the switch.
