Small Pin Count MCUs Optimised for Motor and Lighting Control
High performance Flash microcontrollers include comprehensive analogue and PWM functionality
Renesas has expanded its R8C range of general purpose, small pin count Flash microcontrollers with four new application specific devices that are optimised to the requirements of motor and lighting control applications.
The new Renesas R8C/2E and R8C/2F are suitable for applications such as smart sensors, detectors and lighting control which require a rich set of on chip analogue peripherals. The company’s R8C/2K and R8C/2L devices will suit low end motor control solutions and other applications that require high levels of PWM control.
The R8C/2E and R8C/ 2F are 32-pin devices available with Flash memory sizes of 8K and 16K. These micros are supplied in LQFP packages measuring just 7mm x 7mm x 1.7mm and are fully pin compatible to the Renesas 32-pin R8C/26 and R8C/27.

Designed to offer a lot of onboard analogue functionality, the micros incorporate an 8-bit 2-channel D/A converter, a 2-channel comparator, and a 10-bit 12-channel A/D converter. This rich set of analogue peripheral functions is tightly coupled and can be configured at runtime for different tasks, making the R8C/2E and R8C/2F ideal for applications such as lighting control where quick and accurate analogue processing is required.
Engineers can use the DAC functionality to provide internal voltage references for the comparators, while an integral high speed (40MHz ±2%) can be calibrated down to 1%.
To help ensure system reliability and reduce the need for additional components the devices include a number of different fail-safe functions including clock stop detection, SFR protection, dataflash and watchdog timer.
The Renesas R8C/2K and R8C/2L microcontrollers provide onboard timer functions that are ideal for motor control. By choosing the new devices, engineers can use a single MCU to handle three-phase PWM output for control of brushless DC motors.
The microcontrollers can drive up to 12 x 16-bit PWM outputs in addition to providing three-phase motor control with automatic deadtime insertion with back EMF. The onboard timers can operate at 40MHz from a high-precision on-chip oscillator, allowing fast, precise motor control operation. This oscillator can be calibrated to achieve 1% accuracy.
The new devices are supplied in a 32-pin LQFP package with dimensions of 7mm x 7mm x 1.7mm.

The Renesas R8C/Tiny series is a high performance lineup of low pin count 16-bit MCUs that support low voltage, low power operation from a compact PCB footprint. Suitable for a wide range of applications including industrial, consumer and automotive embedded designs, R8C devices offer from 20 to 80 pins and operate at frequencies up to 20MHz. Standard on-chip peripherals include 8-bit multifunction timers, 16-bit timers, watchdog timers, UART/clock synchronous serial interfaces, voltage detection circuits, Power-On Reset functionality and high/low-speed on-chip oscillators.
