Integrated DC-DC Regulators Shrink Silicon Footprint by 70%

International Rectifier’s IR38xx SupIRBuck™ family of versatile, wide input, single output, synchronous buck voltage regulators is designed for high density, high performance consumer and data centre applications.



This new family of Point-of-Load (PoL) voltage regulators integrates International Rectifier’s benchmark HEXFET® trench technology MOSFETs and a high performance synchronous buck control IC in a compact 5mm by 6mm power QFN package. This allows designers to shrink overall solution size by 70% compared to discrete solutions, while also offering between 8% to 10% higher full-load efficiency than competing monolithic ICs.

The entire family shares a common footprint, so that engineers can simply ‘cut and paste’ their design, deciding on exact current-delivery specifications later in the design cycle. This significantly reduces risk and enables faster time to market.

Designed to provide 4A, 7A or 12A output load currents at 600kHz switching frequency, the IR38xx family is optionally available with 300kHz switching, delivering 6A, 9A or 14A outputs. The devices operate from a wide input voltage range from 2.5V to 21V and provide output voltages as low as 0.6V.

Common features include pre-bias start up, fixed switching frequency, hiccup current limit, thermal shutdown, and precise output voltage regulation. Optional features include tracking and programmable power good.

The SupIRBuck family’s thermally enhanced 5mm x 6mm QFN package features a slim 0.9mm profile, allowing mounting on the back side of a motherboard and making the devices ideally suited for space constrained, high-density server applications.
