At Arrow we pride ourselves on the ability to support our customers at an application level, whether that’s through the identification and supply of components optimised for a specific application or the delivery of comprehensive modular and platform-level solutions. At the same time, we aim to provide our customers with access to support tools and engineering expertise that can simplify the development and prototyping process and minimise all-important time-to-market.

One area that we are increasingly involved in, for example, is motion control. The rapid design and implementation of motor drive solutions is important in application areas ranging from white goods to industrial pumps and fans. What’s more, the move to more efficient and quieter motor technologies including variable speed solutions is demanding increasingly sophisticated electronic-based drive designs. As a result, engineers look to Arrow for the technologies, development platforms and technical support that will help them to address functionality and performance criteria while meeting the need to deliver low power and low cost.

This issue of Arrow Innovation includes a focus on some of the latest technologies for motion control, including microcontrollers and microprocessors, real time signal controllers, converters, references and amplifiers. Many of these products and others like them on Arrow’s extensive linecard are complemented by advanced development platforms and starter kits that speed the evaluation and prototyping of motion control applications.

What’s more, Arrow’s own in house European reference design team has also created development platforms that target the motor control market. Recently, for example, this team announced ‘MotionFire’, an advanced, FPGA-based development platform that can dramatically speed the design, prototyping and testing of motor control applications.
