High Intensity LEDs and Drivers Serve the Needs of Lighting
 
Ultra-low profile SMD LEDs just 0.9mm high
Vishay Intertechnology offers a wide range of LED and driver products, and in particular devices aimed specifically at illumination applications. These include the VLMW63xx and VLMW64xx white LEDs and the SiP12510 and SiP12511 driver products.



The VLMW63xx and VLMW64xx series are high-intensity white SMD LEDs that combine InGaN/TAG-on-sapphire technology with CLCC-6 and CLCC-6 flat ceramic packaging. They provide low thermal resistance (down to 40K/W) and high optical power from 2240mcd (millicandela) to 5600mcd.

Designed for cost-constrained high-volume applications, the devices feature compact footprints of 3.3mm x 3.4 mm. The VLMW64 devices have an ultra-low profile of 0.9mm. The use of ceramic packaging allows the additional current drive required for maximum light output, while maintaining a high service life of up to 50,000 hours.

The LEDs are optimised for backlighting and illumination in automotive and transport, consumer, and general applications. Typical end products include flashes for cameras; emergency lighting; and automotive instrument panels and exterior lighting, such as brake lights and turn signals.

The devices are automotive qualified to AEC-Q101 and offer an ESD-withstand voltage up to 2kV in accordance with JESD22-A114-B.

The SiP12510 and SiP12511 1.25MHz white LED drivers feature 90% typical efficiency, wide input voltage range of 2.5V to 6.0V, and maximum voltage of up to 17V (SiP12510) or 28V (SiP12511).



Offered in SOT23-6 packaging, these drivers offer a compact solution requiring minimal external components. Both devices are equipped with an integrated power switch and run on a high-frequency 1.25MHz switching oscillator. This allows the use of a small-size inductor, reducing system board space requirements.

Their high efficiency and small footprint, allied with a shutdown mode requiring current of less than 1µA, makes the two devices particularly suitable for space-constrained, battery-operated portable applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, and digital cameras.

To enable full control over LED illumination intensity, the SiP12510 and SiP12511 support both linear and PWM techniques for regulating LED current. Both devices include a built-in three-phase soft-start function and protection features, including overvoltage protection, a cycle-by-cycle current limit and a thermal shutdown block.
